Overview

The Certificate in Fundamentals of Property Management is a course of study designed to provide students with the basic competencies required for the management of residential and commercial real estate. This certificate presents a comprehensive overview of the multidisciplinary responsibilities of the professional property manager, from leasing a rental unit to maintaining the physical plant.

This certificate is a flexible, convenient undergraduate credential for part-time students. Prospective students with or without a bachelor’s degree will benefit from this program. Courses are offered in the fall, winter, spring and summer terms, allowing students an opportunity to complete all requirements within one year.

 

Learning Outcomes

The goals of the Certificate in Fundamentals of Property Management are to produce graduates who:

  • Describe the components of an enforceable lease, define operative terms relating to tenancies, and list the Federal Fair Housing Act’s protected classes
  • Assess a landlord’s responsibilities for repairs and maintenance under property maintenance codes, the warranty of habitability, and the lease
  • Identify and explain operating principles of major equipment and systems, and basic diagnostic, maintenance and repair procedures
  • Use plans and technical drawings to answer basic questions related to actual or proposed structures, systems, or sites
  • Evaluate emerging technology to administer a property’s marketing, leasing, maintenance and financial operations

 

Program Structure

The program consists of six courses and is organized in 10-week quarters.  Breaking the year’s academic work into shorter modules of 10 weeks each helps students stay focused and on track.  The program accepts new students in the fall, winter and spring terms.
