As communities diversify, teachers trained to teach English as a Second Language (ESL) are in high demand across the US. Drexel University Online’s ESL certificate prepares students to teach English to students from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Teaching English as a second language in Pennsylvania and many other states now requires a Program Specialist: ESL certificate. Drexel’s ESL certificate satisfies this requirement by equipping teachers with the knowledge and training to educate tomorrow’s leaders in multi-cultural education.
A Quality Graduate Degree on a Flexible Schedule:
Drexel Online’s ESL teaching certificate is taught completely online through Drexel's interactive e-Learning method to fit students’ busy personal and work schedules.
Teaching English as a Second Language certification is an add-on certificate available to students that currently possess a Pennsylvania Instructional I or Instructional II teaching certificate.
This program satisfies the PA state education requirements to teach English as a Second Language. Upon completion of the program, graduates are awarded an ESL teaching certificate and a Drexel University credential to obtain a Pennsylvania TESL position. The student may then apply for PA certification through the hiring school district.
The certificate program is taught by expert faculty who integrate readings, discussion, practicum, and case study experience into each course. Curriculum covers the theory and practice of second language education, the structure and sound of English, the design and assessment of ESL course materials, as well as broader issues in intercultural learning. It does not require that the instructor speak another language. Taught completely online, credits earned through this program may be applied toward the MS in Teaching, Learning and Curriculum: Teacher Certification Track.
TESL requirements vary state by state; applicants from outside PA should consult with their state Department of Education prior to enrolling in our program for specific interstate agreement requirements.
The program can be completed in as little as 6 to 12 months.
Potential applicants who want to teach English outside the United States:
The Drexel TESL credential is designed as an add-on credential for certified teachers working in U.S. elementary and secondary schools. It is not designed for teaching English outside the United States.
While some of the theory and pedagogical approaches for teaching English language learners is the same, the school contexts and the experience of students and their families is very different in an immigrant context such as the U.S. where English is a second language as opposed to an international setting where English is a foreign language: course curricula, readings, and assignments in the Drexel TESL credential assume the U.S. school context, including current standards, testing mandates and curricular approaches. However, students who do plan to eventually teach outside of the United States will benefit from enrollment in a program that gives the kind of training, education, and credentials offered by other excellent education programs offered by Drexel, including the Masters in Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language, as well as shorter certificate programs, which give a more appropriate education for these settings, especially for those interested in working with adults or older learners.
