Drexel's Master of Science in Global & International Education is taught by distinguished faculty members who possess many years of experience both in the classroom and in the field.
Francis Harvey, Ed.D.
Dr. Harvey’s is the Director of the MS program in Global & International Education. His primary academic focus is in science education, with a particular interest in elementary science education. His particular research interests are related to globalization and its impact on education, the role of technology in promoting and facilitation change in individuals and institutions, and using technology (including distance technologies) to promote higher-order concept development. Dr. Harvey’s recent research activities include serving as principal investigator on The Knowledge Revolution, Globalization and Educational Change: Design and Development of Modular, Multidisciplinary, Flexible-Length Learning Materials. He is also the author of Globalizing Education in a Post-9/11 World: Challenges and Opportunities in Proceedings of E-Learn 2004 – World Conference on E-Learning in Corporate, Government, Healthcare, and Higher Education. He received his Ed.D. from Harvard University.
David Urias, Ph.D.
Dr. Urias has an extensive educational background in international education, policy studies, and program evaluation. For the last two years, he has presented research at such international venues as: Kunming, China; Havana, Cuba; and Thessonaliki, Greece. Prior to coming to Drexel, Dr. Urias served as an International Student Services advisor at Texas A&M University, a research associate in the International Studies Office at the University of Virginia, and a graduate intern for the American Council on Education’s Center for Institutional and International Initiatives in Washington, D.C., where he assisted in researching U.S. higher education internationalization efforts. He has earned an advanced certificate in the Teaching of English as a Foreign Language from the Royal Society of Arts and Cambridge University in England. He holds a master’s degree in teaching from The Johns Hopkins University, and a doctorate in educational policy studies and evaluation from the Curry School of Education, University of Virginia. In addition to his educational background and interest in international education, over the last 22 years, he has traveled, lived, and worked in such countries as Perú, Israel, Greece, and England to name a few.
Rebecca Clothey, Ph.D.
Dr. Clothey has a Ph.D. in Education from the University of Pittsburgh and a Master’s Degree in International Relations from the American University in Washington, D.C. Her international education experience spans three continents. She has previously studied in India, worked in Bosnia-Herzegovina, and participated in a service-learning project in Perú. She also studied and taught in China, where she was a Fulbright Scholar. Dr. Clothey worked in the field of international exchange for over five years, including managing a study abroad program for American undergraduates in Beijing, China. She has conducted seminars on cross-cultural communication, culture shock and re-entry shock, as well as orientations for visiting scholars and exchange students. Additionally, Dr. Clothey has served as a tour leader and expert on professional development and study tours sponsored by National Geographic, the Freeman Foundation, and Gettysburg College, among others.
Kristen Betts, Ed.D.
Dr. Betts joined the School of Education after eight years as principal of Research Strategies International, a consulting agency that assists higher education institutions, government agencies and corporations realize opportunities and maximize efficiency through customized research, strategic planning, and professional development. Some of her clients include the U.S. Export-Import Bank, George Mason University, Kyonggi University in Seoul, Korea, the South Korean Ministry of Education, Government of Jeju Island South Korea, the U.S. Army, and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Dr. Betts has taught as an adjunct faculty member at The George Washington University and Old Dominion University. Additionally, she has worked with the National Clearinghouse for Bilingual Education, Fairfax County Public Schools in Virginia, and a language institute in Spain. Dr. Betts received a bachelor’s degree in Spanish from The College of William & Mary, a master’s degree in education from The College of William & Mary, and a doctorate in higher education administration from The George Washington University.
