Program Pre-Requisites
Students entering the program need a basic foundation of knowledge related to information systems to support the advanced work within the program. To meet this need, prior course work or work experience is required in the following areas:
General
Students may meet the IS Foundation requirements through prior course work, work experience, or courses taken at Drexel at the start of their program.
-
Prior course work –The course must have been taken at an accredited institution of higher education within the last 10 years and completed with a grade of B or better. The course may be an undergraduate or graduate course.
-
Drexel Courses – The course must have been taken within the last 10 years and completed with a grade of B or better.
-
Work Experience – The experience must have been within the last 10 years. Exceptions to the 10 year limit will be considered for experience that is somewhat older but considerable more extensive than the minimum requirement. For example, extensive software development experience that is somewhat more than 10 years old.
Information Systems
Students must have a basic understanding of concepts and terminology related to information systems, including the information systems life cycle, the role of information systems in organizations, and challenges in information systems development. Basic knowledge and skills related to processes and techniques in information systems analysis and design is required. This requirement can be met in any of the following ways:
-
Prior course work – By taking an introductory course in information systems or systems analysis and design.
-
Drexel Course – By taking INFO 503, Introduction to Information Systems Analysis, or INFO 530, Information Systems Analysis
-
Work Experience - By having at least one year full-time, focused experience related to information systems design, development, implementation, or operation.

Software
Students must have enough hands-on experience with software development to understand the general concepts and facilities of programming languages, and to appreciate the cognitive challenges of creating good quality software. This requirement can be met in any of the following ways:
-
Prior course work – By taking a programming course that requires students to write a series of programs (at least 6) in a procedural or object-oriented language. Acceptable languages include C, C++, and Java. Markup languages like HTML, query languages like SQL, and macros in packages like Excel do not meet this requirement.
-
Drexel Course – By taking INFO 601, Computer Programming for Information Processing, or INFO 532, Software Development.
-
Work experience - At having least one year full-time, focused experience developing software using one of the languages described above.

Databases
Students must have basic knowledge of data modeling and relational databases as well as understand and be able to use basic database design methods and basic query and administrative functions in SQL.
-
Prior course work – By taking an introductory database course. The course must include database design exercises and hand-on use of a DBMS. Courses that only use desktop databases such as MS Access do not meet this requirement.
-
Drexel Course - By taking INFO 605, Database I.
-
Work Experience - By having at least one year full-time, focused experience related to database design and administration.

Networks
Students must have basic knowledge of concepts and terminology of computer networking. This includes basic technologies and methods for network planning, design, and management as well as an understanding of issues and opportunities that globally increasing network capability present for information systems.
-
Prior course work – By taking an introductory networking course. The course must include coverage of network applications and implications for information systems.
-
Drexel Course - By taking INFO 614, Distributed Computing and Networking, or INFO 534, Networking Applications.
-
