MFTP 518 - Introduction to Medical Family Therapy (3 credits)

This course is designed to equip family therapists, medical health professionals, and other creative therapy practitioners to work collaboratively in addressing the unique psychosocial problems of individuals, couples and families with acute and chronic medically related concerns.

MFTP 537 - Multicultural and Family Systems Approach in Health Care (4 credits)

This course provides health professionals an understanding of the role of family members in promoting positive health outcomes for the person with an illness and knowledge of ethnic and cultural diversity in order to effectively communicate with patients / clients in clinical settings.

MFTP 538 - Issues and Trends in Health Policy for Families (3 credits)

This course will provide the clinician with an introduction to the history, structure, and function of health policy. The overall learner objective for clinicians is to analyze health policies that impact children, families, and aging populations. Students need to learn about how health care policies are developed, implemented, evaluated, and changed by policy makers and interest groups; plus, how such policies affect the lives of clients and their families. Students will learn how they can take a leadership role or affect change by advocating for health care policies that improve the lives of their clients. Both systemic and socio-political perspectives will be used as a lens to evaluate the current health policy system.

CFTP 500 - Systems Theory (4 credits)

This course will present an overview of systems theory, particularly general systems theory and cybernetics. This course will include a critique of system theory from a feminist and cross-cultural perspective.

CFTP 501- Introduction to Family Therapy (4 credits)

The purpose of this course is to introduce the student to major family therapy theories and their relationship to general systems theory and cybernetics.

CFTP 505 Bowen Therapy (4 credits)

This course offers a brief review of the history and development of the life work of Murray Bowen, M.D., an overview of the resulting theory of human behavior, Bowen Theory, and use of its interactive components in clinical, research and organizational applications.

CFTP 508 Structural Family Therapy (4 credits)

This course is designed to introduce students to the practice and principles of Structural Family Therapy. This course will identify interventions related to structural theory and person of the therapist.

This course will introduce students to the theory and practice of sex therapy. Sexual disorders and sexuality will be addressed from the perspective of the individual, couple and family or origin.

CFTP 517 Addictions (4 credits)

The process of addiction will be examined in the context of the family and the larger social system. A wide exposure to theory and treatment models will be utilized to aid students' assessment and intervention skills in treating families with substance abuse issues.

CFTP 537 Nosology and CFT Practice (4 credits)

This course focuses on the principles of individual diagnosis of mental illness as defined in the DSM-IV TR classification system.  It will provide general guidelines about therapeutic interventions based on these diagnoses including a brief introduction to the use of psychopharmacology. This course emphasizes the dynamics of diagnosis and biological treatment in relational therapy.
